Training -- Week 21!

It took a few days, but the antibiotics started working. I skipped my run Monday and Tuesday and did my full “Dopey simulation” Wednesday-Saturday.

Wednesday morning was 3 miles at an easy pace. Thursday was 5 miles at a push pace. I pushed myself to go a bit faster on a hillier course. Friday was an energy-conserving 10 miles. I completely walked the 1st, 6th, and 10th mile, and ran the rest. I still finished with a sub-16 minute pace requirement which mentally felt good, knowing I could walk some and still maintain pace. The hardest mile was 6.5-7.5. It was cold so even though I warmed up early on, I cooled off walking and it took me a while to warm back up. I treated myself with a post-run donut!

Saturday was our 20-miler! Before we got started, I presented my Mission Moment – the reason why each of us run and fundraise. It was too cold and too far for Dad to join me, but I crafted a nice TNT shaped sign.

We ran on Silver Comet Trail. I like that it’s out and back, flat, and has real bathrooms along the way if needed. We had 3 supported water stops, so 6 total – one volunteer even dressed up at Chewbacca for a character stop! Very early on, my Garmin said I had run an 11:34 mile, so I knew my GPS was having issues again. Luckily the road is clearly painted with a mile marker (although somewhere around mile 7, the posted signs seemed off). Slow and steady, Coach Ed and I headed out, then headed back. And unbelievably, I felt okay! I was able to maintain my run/walk intervals and finished 20 miles at a 14:57 pace! As hard as 18.5 miles was the week before, 20 seemed manageable.

And that was my Dopey simulation. I can do 3, 5, 10, and 20 (and feel decent enough to celebrate with a post-run lunch), I can do 3.1, 6.2, 13.1, and 26.2! Mentally, it was the first time I really thought this is possible. I’ve had so much doubt over the course of the training plan. But I went to bed Saturday night believing I could do it. P.S. The team rolled out the purple streamer tape which will be the only finish line tape I ever break!

Week 21: Run 38.38 miles + Walk 1.29 miles = 39.67 total miles

Cumulative: Run 424.27 miles + Walk 23.89 miles = 448.16 cumulative miles
